Man Gets Up to 10 Years for Fatal Stabbing at NYE Party

A Boston man convicted of fatally stabbing a college student during a dispute over noise at a New Year's Eve party has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

Brian MacDonald was sentenced Thursday in Suffolk Superior Court following his conviction last week for voluntary manslaughter in the death of 21-year-old Anthony Spaulding in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2013.

Spaulding was a Harwich native living in the city's Allston neighborhood while attending college.

Authorities say MacDonald and Spaulding got into a dispute after Spaulding asked guests at his apartment, including MacDonald, to quiet down. MacDonald's lawyer said the stabbing was self-defense.

Bianca Hollenbeck, indicted for assault and battery for allegedly assaulting Spaulding before he was killed, will be retried after the jury deadlocked in her case.
