Police have identified a 19-year-old Providence, Rhode Island, man who apparently drowned while swimming with friends in Smithfield.
Police say Augustin Kabura and several friends were attempting to swim to an island at Georgiaville Pond on Saturday afternoon. Kabura tired and tried to swim back to shore when went under. Friends and eyewitnesses pulled him out of the water and brought him ashore.
Police say beachgoers were performing CPR on Kabura when emergency crews arrived.
He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Kabura graduated from Providence Career and Technical Academy in 2014.
Contributions to help the family can be made to St. Michael's Church. The teen is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday.
