Man Jumps From Burning Building; 12 Displaced After Fire

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities say up to a dozen people have been displaced after fire engulfed an apartment building in Providence, Rhode Island, and one tenant was injured after he jumped from a window.

The Providence Journal reports that firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Desmarais says a man living in the 3½-story complex was found injured in an alley next to the building after he jumped to escape the smoke and flames.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. His condition was unknown.

Investigators were still working Thursday to determine the cause of the fire.

The local Red Cross was helping the tenants find temporary shelter.
