61-Year-Old Man Killed in Fire in Fall River, Massachusetts

Firefighters said they faced multiple challenges, including there being only one truck available as well as freezing temperatures

A fire broke out Sunday evening at a multi-family home in Fall River, Massachusetts, killing a man on the third floor.

Authorities announced Wednesday that the fire, which killed 61-year-old Joseph Mello, was caused by "the improper use or handling of smoking materials."

According to necn affiliate WJAR, the flames could be seen shooting from the Eastern Avenue building around 6:30 p.m.

Firefighters said they faced multiple challenges, including there being only one truck available as well as freezing temperatures.

No information about the victim was immediately available, but investigators believe he lived in the building.
