Man Pleads Not Guilty in Crash That Killed Girlfriend

Police say Scott Gavitt was drunk when he crashed the vehicle on Feb. 25 on Route 2 in Exeter

A Rhode Island man accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed his 17-year-old girlfriend has pleaded not guilty.

Eighteen-year-old Scott Gavitt of Exeter was arraigned Monday in Washington County Superior Court on charges including driving under the influence with death resulting in the crash that killed Heidi Malstrom, of Coventry.

Police say Gavitt was drunk when he crashed the vehicle on Feb. 25 on Route 2 in Exeter. Police say the vehicle spun out across the road, hit a pole and rolled over.

Gavitt and two other passengers were injured in the crash. Officials say one of the injured passengers was wearing a seatbelt and the others were not.

Gavitt's bail was lowered to $10,000 with surety. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 6.
