Man Who Dumped Sewage in Neighborhood Sentenced

Dennis Brown pleaded guilty Wednesday in Calais District Court

A Maine man who dumped up to 96,000 gallons of sewage in a residential neighborhood has been sentenced to 10 days in jail.

Attorney General Janet Mills says 32-year-old Dennis Brown Jr. directed the unlicensed discharge of untreated sewage from a malfunctioning pump station by dumping the sewage behind a residential area in 2014. He was working as a certified operator for the Passamaquoddy Tribal Government's wastewater treatment plan in Indian Township at the time.

Brown pleaded guilty Wednesday in Calais District Court to violating state environmental laws. Mills says Brown initially reported to state authorities that the sewage was being transported by truck to another station that was functional.

He also faces a $2,500 fine and has agreed to give up his wastewater operator's certification.
