Volunteer Firefighter Injured in Crash With Police Cruiser

A 25-year-old Bloomfield volunteer firefighter who was injured in a crash with a Bloomfield police officer who was responding to a call just at 10:18 p.m. on Thursday is now in fair condition.

State police said Officer Alecia Aldrich had her lights and sirens on and was responding to a call about a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle when her cruiser and a 2000 Lexus ES 300 driven by Dwayne McLish, 25 of Bloomfield, collided at Park Avenue and School Street, police said.

McLish is a volunteer for Blue Hills Fire Co. 3, at 779 Blue Hills Ave. in Bloomfield, officials said. Police said his injuries were serious. As of Friday afternoon, McLish is in fair condition.

“He’s a good firefighter. He’s very active as a volunteer and he gives everything to the community and the town of Bloomfield," Chief Robert Farmer, of the Blue Hills Fire Department, said.

It was difficult for the firefighters to respond to crash involving one of their own, Farmer said, and they are hoping he has a smooth recovery.

Aldrich’s injuries were minor and she has been released from the hospital.
Park Avenue was closed for around five hours, but has reopened.

State police are investigating.
