Man in Police Custody Collapses and Dies in Rhode Island

The incident occurred at the Woonsocket police station

Rhode Island officials are investigating the death of a man who collapsed while in police custody.

Police in Woonsocket announced Thursday that 47-year-old Dondi Willis collapsed at the police station Monday morning while waiting to be brought to court. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police Chief Thomas Oates III says there was no struggle between Willis and officers. He says Willis collapsed on his way to a prisoner transport van.

Authorities say an autopsy was conducted and they are awaiting toxicology results.

State police and the state Attorney General's Office were called into investigate under normal protocols.

The Providence Journal reports Willis was arrested Sunday and had a lengthy criminal record in Rhode Island and Massachusetts including arrests for violating no-contact orders and possessing firearms and drugs.
