Man on Trial in Hit-and-Run Death of Bicyclist

A Springfield, Massachusetts, man charged with a fatal hit and run involving a bicyclist will face trial because a plea deal is not anticipated

A Springfield, Massachusetts, man charged with a fatal hit and run involving a bicyclist will face trial because a plea deal is not anticipated.

The prosecutor and defense attorney told a Superior Court judge Monday they expect the trial of Adam Thurber to take three days.

The Republican reports that authorities allege Thurber was driving his pickup truck at about 70 miles per hour at about 3 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2014 when he struck bicyclist Derek Russell. Russell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors say pieces of the bicycle were found almost a mile way.

Thurber has pleaded not guilty to charges including motor vehicle homicide. He is being held on $100,000 bail.

His lawyer wants the judge to exclude the prosecution's expert's opinion regarding Thurber's speed.
