Manholes Explode in Brockton, Massachusetts

No injuries were reported

National Grid is apologizing after manhole covers exploded in Brockton, Massachusetts late Tuesday night.

Fire crews responded to the explosions at Montello and Court streets at about 11 p.m. where smoke could be seen coming from three manholes.

According to The Enterprise, this is the third time in eight months that manholes have exploded in the city.

National Grid said Wednesday they wanted to apologize to the people of Brockton for the inconvenience and that a review would be completed.

“I want to apologize to the people of Brockton who felt either an inconvenience and or a sense of lack of safety that was not our intent to put anyone in that position,” said Marcy Reed, President of National Grid.

National Grid officials said that 110 manhole reviews out of 140 have been completed since an incident last summer. Two from last night had not been checked.

No injuries were reported in the explosions.

Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter said Wednesday that the area has been deemed safe.
