Massachusetts Foundation Commits $500K to Hunger Relief

A Massachusetts foundation has pledged a half million dollars for hunger relief programs around the state.

The Newton-based Highland Street Foundation says the money will support food banks and pantries, meal assistance programs and shelters.

Executive Director Blake Jordan says hunger is a year-round problem in the state but families are particularly vulnerable during the holidays and the winter.

A recent study released by Feeding America revealed that one in nine people in eastern Massachusetts can't regularly count on getting enough to eat.

The organizations receiving support include the Boston Medical Center Grow Clinic, Falmouth Service Center, Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Greater Boston Food Bank, Merrimack Valley Food Bank and the New England Center for Homeless Veterans.
