Massachusetts Police Warn of Scam Involving Fake $100 Bills

Detectives in southeastern Massachusetts are teaming up with the U.S. Secret Service to investigate a counterfeit scam.

Swansea Police Chief George Arruda tells the Herald News that scammers are bleaching real $5 bills and reprinting them to look like $100 bills.

Arruda is warning the community to be wary of accepting $100 bills. He says a security strip on the bills will display their real value.

Arruda says they are investigating two suspects who targeted Swansea businesses this month. The first incident occurred Aug. 8, when a man entered a Dunkin' Donuts and used a fake $100 bill to complete a transaction. Then an employee at a Friendly's told police on Monday that a woman asked to break a fake $100 bill into $20 bills.
