Massachusetts State Trooper Dragged by Car; Driver Arrested

A man was arrested after a Massachusetts State Police trooper was dragged a short distance on a highway in Medford, the department says.

Police say shortly before 10:30 a.m. Sunday, trooper David Strong stopped an Acura driven by 23-year-old Robert Aybar of Lawrence on I-93 south in Medford. The trooper opened the door, and while he was holding it, Aybar took off, according to police.

The trooper was able to free his arm and avoid injury, but police say he was dragged a short distance to the next parallel lane.

Aybar was stopped again on Route 16 in Everett. He was arrested and faces charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on an officer, negligent operation, failure to stop and resisting arrest. Police also say he was driving without a license, as the only identification he had was from the Dominican Republic.

State police say Aybar will be arraigned in Somerville District Court. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
