The mayor of Newport, Rhode Island, has asked liquor license holders to not serve alcohol before 11 a.m. Saturday, the day of the city's annual St. Patrick's parade.
Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitano says cooperation is voluntary. She says delaying alcohol would help make the parade more family-friendly.
The Newport Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) that state law bars holders of liquor licenses from serving alcohol between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Tom Desmond, general manager of Brick Alley Pub, said the restaurant would begin serving breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday and customers may order a drink.
The mayor says she was not referring to restaurants that serve breakfasts with a "Bloody Mary or a mimosa." She said her request was for bars that open early on parade day and only serve drinks.
