Motorist Who Tried to Elude New Hampshire Police Is Rescued From River

Authorities say a motorist who tried to escape from police had to be rescued when he jumped into a river and began struggling.

Hudson police say 33-year-old Lenell Lopez, of Nashua, fled after an officer tried to stop him for speeding around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. They say Lopez tried to drive away but struck a tree.

Police say Lopez ran from his vehicle, jumped into the Merrimack River and began floating downstream but he started struggling in the water. The Hudson Fire Department sent out a boat and rescued him.

Lopez was treated at a hospital and released. He's being held in jail pending arraignment Monday on charges including disobeying a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of drugs. It wasn't immediately known if he has a lawyer.
