Compounding Center Owner, Husband Plead Guilty to Illegal Cash Withdrawals

The majority owner of the New England Compounding Center and her husband have pleaded guilty to illegally withdrawing cash following the fungal meningitis outbreak.

Carla Conigliaro, 53, and her husband Douglas, 55, of Dedham admitted in federal court Friday to withdrawing $124,000 in cash from their bank accounts in a manner intended to defeat financial reporting requirements.

The couple was not charged with having an active role in managing the compounding center.

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1.

The 2012 fungal meningitis outbreak killed 64 people and sickened more than 750 people in 20 states.

The now-shuttered Framingham-based compounding center was accused of using expired ingredients and failing to follow cleanliness standards, resulting in tainted steroid injections.

A dozen other employees and associates face charges, including multiple counts of second-degree murder.
