NH Hospital Providing Baby Boxes for Newborns

The birthing center at Memorial Hospital in North Conway is providing the boxes to families who express or show a need for help in providing a safe sleep environment for their babies

A New Hampshire hospital is the latest to send newborns home with a baby box aimed at encouraging safe sleeping habits.

The boxes, which include firm mattresses designed for babies up to eight months of age and an assortment of infant care items, are modeled on a successful baby box initiative in Finland that began in the 1930s and lowered that country's infant mortality rate.

The birthing center at Memorial Hospital in North Conway is providing the boxes to families who express or show a need for help in providing a safe sleep environment for their babies. Parents will receive the boxes after getting training from hospital staff.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics about 35,000 babies in the United States die every year related to unsafe sleep environments.
