The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office has released the name of a Derry, New Hampshire, man who was shot and killed by police on Wednesday after he opened fire on an officer.

Police said Andrew J. Toto, 54, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest and the manner of death was homicide. An autopsy was conducted on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, in a sparsely populated neighborhood. Police said the officer was not hit by any bullets and was not injured.

Around 8:02 a.m., Derry Police received a 911 call saying that the caller's husband had just driven away from their home near Pinyon Lane. The caller said her husband was distraught, armed with a shotgun, and suicidal.

An officer responding to the scene encountered the husband's truck parked at the intersection of Scobie Pond and Julien roads. As the officer's cruiser approached the truck, the man in the truck began firing at him. The officer returned fire, and the man suffered a single gunshot wound and was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing, the attorney general's office said, and a report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Sgt. Brian Strong at the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit at 603-223-4381.
