A daycare center in Nantucket, Massachusetts, has been closed after several violations, including failure to respond to injuries sustained by children at the facility.

The State Department of Early Education and Care cited the Wee Whaler after conducting four investigations since the Newtown Road facility was last renewed in 2014.

According to a release from the EEC, violations included failing to file a report of possible abuse or neglect with the Department of Children and Families as required by law.

Other violations included enrolling 8 new children in direct violation of an enrollment freeze that was imposed in July 2016 and employing staff who had not undergone appropriate background checks.

Kathleen Hart, of the EEC, issued the following statement:

"Due to serious non-compliance with state licensing regulations that has put children at immediate risk, the Department of Early Education and Care issued an emergency suspension of the Wee Whalers group and school age child care program license that required them to cease operations, and is refusing to renew the program's license. The Department recognizes the impact of this action on families and is working with area programs to offer alternative care arrangements for the children."
