A national advocate for the poor and homeless says she plans to panhandle in front of the Bangor, Maine, police station in response to a department Facebook post.
Pat LaMarche, a former gubernatorial candidate, says she will protest a police Facebook post she says unfairly portrays panhandlers as liars and scammers.
Police say in the post that Sharpies are a tool that can be used to manipulate others. Panhandlers often use Sharpies to write signs seeking handouts.
LaMarche criticized the post in an interview with the Portland Press Herald, saying shaming the poor and homeless sends the wrong message.
A department spokesman says the post was designed to warn about aggressive panhandlers.
LaMarche's protest starts Monday at 11 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. She will donate money raised to charity.
