Officer Accidentally Discharges Gun, Hits Cruiser

The department is conducting a personnel investigation, but the officer was not placed on leave and is still working

Authorities say a Hampton, New Hampshire, police officer accidentally discharged his pistol at the department's firing range earlier this week and caused minor damage to a town police cruiser.

The Portsmouth Herald reports the accident occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday at the police department's range located behind the Department of Public Works building on Hardardt's Way.

Police say the officer attempted to holster his department-issued .40-caliber Glock 22 pistol when it fired. Deputy Chief David Hobbs says the bullet went through the door of a nearby cruiser, but no one was injured.

The department is conducting a personnel investigation, but Hobbs says the officer was not placed on leave and is still working.

Damage to the cruiser will be assessed when it's taken to a body shop.
