Officer Returns Home After Shooting

Almost every Cape Cod police car paraded down Main Street in Bourne, Massachusetts, to honor the community's hero - Officer Jared MacDonald.

"I really didn't expect so many people to be out," said MacDonald. "Marine Corp flags, police officers, firefighters, it;s absolutely phenomenal."

It's the first time the officer has been home since the February shooting. MacDonald was shot as well as two U.S. Coast Guard women, one of whom was killed.

"It's been a life altering experience, to be honest," said MacDonald.

Spending weeks at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Center in Boston's Charlestown neighborhood, he's been able to go from using a wheelchair to crutches.

"I beat the doctors at suggesting I could maybe walk, but might not run," he said. "I believe I said I was going to shoot for a crutch by summer. We've already beat that."

As the parade continued, Bourne residents waved flags and held signs, giving MacDonald a grand welcome home.

"My husband's a police officer, and so is my brother, so we support them," said Katrina Desrosier.

"Mac has been a friend of the family for many, many years, in addition to supporting the town as a Bourne Police officer," said Joe Publicover. "I want to come out and show my support for him."

Even through this ordeal, MacDonald is still smiling.

"One of the things my wife and I have always said is that there are things in life you can't change. You have to deal with what's given to you, and therefore, keep on smiling," he said.

MacDonald says he's still on the road to recovery, but hopes to return to work. As for right now, he's just happy to be back home.
