Burlington, Vermont, police say that for the first time in the city, officers revived a man suffering a heroin overdose with the antidote drug naloxone.

Police say that at about 9:30 Thursday night an officer found an unresponsive driver in a vehicle that was stopped in traffic.

Officer Darren Kennedy and Sgt. James Trieb determined the 56-year-old man had a history heroin use and he was showing physical signs of an overdose.

The officers and firefighters who arrived a short time later administered naloxone, reviving the man who was charged with driving under the influence of a narcotic. The victim will be offered treatment.

Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo says it was the first time officers saved a life since with naloxone since they began carrying it earlier this year.
