Officials: Cost of Longfellow Bridge Rebuild Still Uncertain

Massachusetts Department of Transportation officials say they are now unsure how much it will cost to rebuild the historic Longfellow Bridge or who would be responsible for paying the project's overruns.

The Boston Globe reports the news comes a year after MassDOT confirmed that the project to rebuild the 110-year old span connecting Boston to Cambridge would take longer than anticipated.

Thomas Tinlin, Massachusetts' highway administrator, said he doesn't expect the cost to exceed the $303 million the state budgeted for the entire project. But that figure included money for various contingencies and incentives for the contractor to remain on schedule.

Peter White, president of J.F. White Contracting, says the project's final cost may not be revealed until it's completed.

The bridge is scheduled to open by September 2018.
