    FILE - NBC 5 News

Unitil officials have confirmed that a hawk was responsible for causing widespread power outages experienced in the Concord, New Hampshire, area over the weekend.

The Concord Monitor reports power outages were first reported around 8:20 a.m. Saturday and affected about 13,000 customers in Concord, Bow, Dunbarton, Canterbury and Boscawen. The majority of affected customers were in New Hampshire's capital city.

Spokesman Alec O'Meara says the hawk clipped a main transmission line near the center of the utility's electrical system in Concord. The location of the line was the reason the outage was so widespread.

O'Meara says Unitil officials are unsure how the hawk came into contact with the transmission line, but it didn't survive.

Power was restored to the community by about 9:40 a.m.
