Officials Searching for Missing Hiker

The hiker activated a personal locator beacon indicating an emergency

New Hampshire's Fish and Game Department officers are planning to resume their search for a hiker in the White Mountains who activated a personal locator beacon indicating an emergency.

Sgt. Mark Ober says crews searched through the night Sunday in fierce winds and frigid temperatures for the hiker. They hiked over 3 miles to a location north of Mt. Madison and searched in deep snow and woods in an area identified by the signal.

Searchers were unable to find any sign of the hiker and were forced to suspend the search due to temperatures of 20 degrees below zero with winds of 60 to 80 miles an hour and low visibility.

Ober said the beacon is registered to 32-year-old Kate Matrosova of New York City.
