A teen injured during an explosion at a bonfire in Marlborough on Sunday night is hospitalized with serious injuries and state police are investigating.

State police and firefighters responded to 342 Jones Hollow Road in Marlborough at 9:45 p.m. after receiving reports of an explosion at a home and found 18-year-old Robert Hill with serious abdominal injuries, as well as other unidentified injuries.

EMS crews started performing first aid and LifeStar transported Hill to Hartford Hospital.

Police said Hill and several other teens had been at a bonfire behind the house and someone threw a plastic bag of trash into the fire. Something in that bag exploded and the debris hit Hill.

One of the people who was at the party said they did not see anything in the bag, but heard a "sonic boom" after putting it in the fire.

Police said Hill does not live at the home where the bonfire was set.

State Police detectives, major crimes and the fire and explosion investigating unit are investigating and will determine whether any charges will be filed.
