Crews Search for Missing Boater

1 person has been found in the boat rescue operation, search continues for a second.

A search and rescue operation is ongoing Tuesday evening at a Massachusetts beach for a person whose boat overturned.

Crews are continuing to search for the missing boater at Salisbury Beach State Reservation.

Two people went overboard after their boat capsized by the jetty just before 6 p.m.

Officials say the boaters were floating near the boat. One was able to make it to the jetty. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Corey Cauble, who is camping in the area, rushed over to the jetty to see what was happening.

"He looked like he was either really upset or he was exhausted," Cauble said. "He had to stop a few times."

The search by air, land and sea has been going on since the boat capsized. Witnesses and neighbors are very concerned with the harsh conditions, including wind gusts over 29 mph, waves as tall as six feet and the water temperature around 48 degrees. Some wondered why they were out in the first place.

"I hope he's OK," said Gina Hewitt. "The water is cold and crazy right now so I really hope he survives this. It would be a shame."

The Coast Guard announced just after 11:30 p.m. that it plans "to continue searching at first light."
