3 Injured in Head-on Crash in Willimantic

Three people have been sent to the hospital following a serious overnight crash in Willimantic near the Capitol Garage on Route 32 at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning, according to police.

Police tell NBC Connecticut that two cars were engaged in a head-on collision that resulted in heavy damage at the intersection of Route 32 (West Main Street) and Capitol Drive.

Route 32 remained closed until just before 8 a.m. according to police.

The Willimantic Police Department accident reconstruction team responded to the scene and are attempting to figure out how the crash happened.

At this point, police investigators believe that one of the cars crossed over into oncoming traffic, hitting the other vehicle head-on.

Police say the driver of that vehicle, an unidentified woman in her 20s, had to be extricated from her car by the jaws of life and sustained a head injury after hitting her windshield.

The woman was flown to Hartford Hospital via Lifestar in serious condition, according to police.

Police say two men were in the other car that was struck and were hospitalized locally via ambulance for non life threatening injuries.

Police say they are working to determine if alcohol, speed and distracted driving may have been factors in causing the accident.

Anyone who may have witnessed this accident is being urged to contact the Willimantic Police Department.
