Four people were injured after a multi-vehicle crash on I-495 in Lawrence, Massachusetts on Saturday morning.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the accident occurred in both the north- and southbound sides of the highway near exit 42 around 7:30 a.m.

The incident began when a 27-year-old Haverhill, Mass. man lost control of his 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse, crossed from the southbound side of the road to the north, and struck a 2013 Ford Transit van.

The Ford was driven by a 31-year-old Lancaster, Mass. man.

As the initial collision unfolded, a 24-year-old Haverhill woman driving southbound in a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox slowed to avoid the accident. At this time, a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 25-year-old Methuen, Mass man hit her car in the rear.

All lanes of the highway were closed down so that a medical helicopter could land. It transported the driver of the Mitsubishi to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with life-threatening injuries.

The other three vehicles' drivers were brought to Lawrence General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

I-495 southbound was reopened for traffic by about 8:30 a.m. and the northbound side of the highway was reopened by 10:10 a.m.
