PD: Barricaded Man Lights Self on Fire

Police were asked to conduct a well-being check of the resident, who was experiencing mental health issues at the time

Police in South Portland, Maine, say a man lit himself on fire during a barricade situation with police Monday.

The incident happened around 2:40 p.m. at a home at 344 Broadway St.

Police were asked to conduct a well-being check of the resident, who was experiencing mental health issues at the time.

Officials could not make contact with him, but knew he was inside, so a perimeter was established with SWAT members.

Negotiators worked through the evening, but could not gain entry.

Around 9 p.m., the man set himself on fire and officials rushed to save his life.

He was brought to Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and will be evaluated by psychiatric staff.

No officers were injured and police say it doesn’t appear he will be charged as no crime was committed.

As of Monday night his family was still not informed of the incident.
