PD: Man Dies in Fire After Being Unable to Reach Wheelchair

Randolph firefighters found Thomas Johnson trapped in the bedroom of his Braintree home

Vermont State Police say a 70-year-old man died in a fire that broke out at his Orange County home because he was unable to reach his wheelchair.

Randolph firefighters found Thomas Johnson trapped in the bedroom of his Braintree home when they arrived around 7 a.m. Tuesday to battle the blaze.

Fire crews broke through a wall into Johnson's bedroom and pulled him from the room.

Johnson was transported to Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, where he was later pronounced dead from smoke inhalation.

Johnson's son was also treated for minor injuries.

State police and the Division of Fire Safety are investigating the cause of the blaze, which has been deemed not suspicious.
