Pete Frates To Be Honored During Red Sox/Boston College Game

Former college team captain credited as inspiration for "Ice Bucket Challenge" phenomenon

Boston College's baseball team is honoring a former team captain credited as the inspiration for the "Ice Bucket Challenge" phenomenon.

Players will be wearing specially-designed jerseys at an exhibition game with the Boston Red Sox exhibition in Fort Myers, Florida, on Tuesday. The jerseys are replicas of the one Pete Frates wore during his senior year in 2007, complete with his last name and number 3 on the back.

Frates, of Beverly, Massachusetts, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS in 2012. His friends and family came up with the ice bucket challenge, which became an internet sensation last summer, helping raise over $200 million for the ALS Foundation.

BC's replica jerseys will be auctioned online to benefit the Pete Frates No. 3 Fund, which helps cover his medical care and other expenses.
