Plane Hits Bird, Returns to Boston

A common quote says that dogs are man's best friend. For Paul DiGeronimo, he's never met his Hungarian pointer, but he's ready to pick up the new puppy in Richmond, Virginia.

His future buddy will have to wait a little longer. With less that 30 minutes in the air, their flight from Boston to Virginia was diverted back to Logan International Airport because their plane hit a bird.

"Right after takeoff, we heard a big thump," she said. "Smelled some odors in the cabin."

DiGeronimo says the plane never reached 4,000 feet, and crews prepared for an unexpected landing.

"He went through all the safety regulations and the plane was safe, but he wanted to return here," said DiGeronimo.

Because of flight schedules, he won't get to see his doggy just yet. Even with the inconvenience, he says all the passengers seemed pleased with the decision to come back to Boston.

"I observed everyone coming off the plane just now, and they were great," he said. "People were just very calm and excited about where they are going to next."

All of the passengers were accommodated with a flight that left at noon. That aircraft that hit the bird is still being inspected.
