Planning Underway for Basketball Tournament in Memory of Slain MIT Officer

A basketball tournament to benefit a scholarship fund named for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology officer killed by the Boston Marathon bombers is planned for August.

Organizers are inviting first responders, medical personnel and sports enthusiasts are to participate in the fourth annual Sean Collier Memorial Basketball Tournament scheduled for Aug. 6 and 7 at MIT's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center.

Collier was fatally shot three days after two bombs placed near the finish line of the 2013 marathon killed three people and injured more than 260. Authorities said the two brothers who detonated the bombs were trying to steal Collier's gun during a getaway attempt.

The scholarship is used to send one MIT self-sponsored recruit through the Lowell Police Academy each year as a student officer.

Organizers say there's a $300 registration fee per team, which can have a maximum of 12 players, and a $5 donation at the door for spectators. Anyone with registration or sponsorship questions can contact Rafael Olmedo at 781-816-3536 or via email at rafaelolmedo3@gmail.com
