Plymouth Town Beaches Closed to Swimming After Confirmed Shark Sighting

Town beaches are closed for three hours

Town beaches in Plymouth, Massachusetts, were closed to swimmers after a confirmed shark sighting Saturday afternoon.

Swimming at Plymouth beaches was suspended for three hours after the harbormaster received a report from a lobsterman who said he saw a nearly 9-foot long white shark at the surface alongside his boat.

The beaches re-opened to swimming by 3:30 p.m., according to the harbormaster.

Several Cape Cod beaches have been temporarily closed to swimming this summer because of shark sightings.

Earlier in the day Saturday, Nauset Beach in Orleans was closed for an hour after there was a confirmed attack on a seal by a great white shark just before 10 a.m.

Surveillance has been stepped up this summer after two shark attacks on humans off Cape Cod last year, including one that killed a 26-year-old Massachusetts man.
