Police: Father Sentenced After Using Heroin Near Son

Police say his son screamed for help after he used heroin and began to lose consciousness

A Vermont man has pleaded guilty to child cruelty after police say he and his partner took heroin and passed out in a car with their 5-year-old son in the backseat.

The Burlington Free Press reports 42-year-old Adam Legrand, of Franklin, entered the plea Thursday in Burlington. He was sentenced to spend 18 months under the supervision of the Rapid Intervention Community Court while he undergoes drug treatment elsewhere.

Legrand received the same sentence as his partner, 38-year-old Hannah Smith, who recently pleaded guilty to the same charge.

Police say their son screamed for help after the couple used heroin and began to lose consciousness in July. Court documents say passers-by found the parents in a semi-conscious state.

The adults were hospitalized and given an opiate overdose reversal drug.
