Police: Fisherman Finds Cannonball on Boston Beach

State police are conducting a controlled detination of the "found ordnance"

A rusty, pitted cannonball that may have dated to the Civil War-era was detonated on a Boston beach hours after it was discovered by a fisherman.

The roughly 12-inch cannonball was buried under a sand berm and the state police bomb squad conducted a controlled detonation at about noon Thursday.

State police said on their official Twitter account that the ordnance was likely inert, but some cannonballs are filled with powder and could retain explosive capability.

There was some black material inside the cannonball but what is was is not immediately clear.

State officials consulted with the U.S. Navy before detonating it.

The cannonball was discovered by a fisherman in South Boston on Carson Beach near Castle Island on Thursday morning.
