Police say icy road conditions in southern Maine played a role in a series of crashes and necessitated road closures and a speed limit reduction.

Authorities closed U.S. Route 1 south of Ogunquit during the Thursday morning rush hour because of the conditions. The road has since reopened. Police also report multiple crashes on Interstate 95 in Biddeford and Wells. The Wells crash left four injured, none seriously.

Police reduced the speed limit on the Maine Turnpike from New Hampshire to Falmouth, Maine, to 45 mph on Thursday morning. The speed limit restriction has since been lifted.
