Police Increase State House Security in Wake of Virginia Shooting

There is no known threat to Massachusetts and the measure is being taken as a general precaution

There were increased patrols around the State House Wednesday following the Virginia shooting of a congressman and three other people, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Although there is no known threat to Massachusetts, the measure is being taken as a general precaution, authorities said.

Five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, were taken to local hospitals following a shooting at a Congressional Republican baseball practice in Alexandria. One of those people was not shot, but suffered injuries. Local police say the gunman is in custody.

Scalise's office said the congressman was shot in the hip and was in stable condition before going into surgery.
