Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting

A man has died after being shot by police in Beverly, Massachusetts, officials confirmed Saturday.

According to investigators, a suicidal 49-year-old man from Hamilton hit three cars, including two police cruisers, with his vehicle.

The incident took place behind the Cummings Center on Balch Street.

"He was driving the black vehicle, the SUV, and was hitting my mother's car and the police car, back and forth, back and forth," said Alicia Guerrette.

Guerrette says the man's wife was a passenger in her mother's car.

"He hit her car and the police car multiple times," she said.

Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said he can't say whether this was a domestic violence case, and that the man's motive remains unclear.

The man, Blodgett said, was ordered to stop and did not do so. A responding officer fired a shot through the driver's side window, hitting the man.

Police on the scene performed first aid on the man, who was transported to the hospital before being pronounced dead.

Beverly Police Chief John LeLacheur said the shooter, a senior officer, will be on administrative leave throughout the investigation.
