A motorist on furlough from the Vermont Department of Corrections was arrested on DUI and other charges after he traveled the wrong way and struck a State Police cruiser in the town of Berlin.
Before 11 p.m. Friday night, State Police responded to a report of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Interstate 89. The vehicle was stopped in the passing lane when officers arrived.
A responding officer told the male occupant to shut the vehicle off, but he maneuvered around the officer's vehicle and continued to drive northbound in the southbound lanes.
More officers responded in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle. The motorist ultimately struck a trooper's cruiser, which locked the two vehicles together. He continued to attempt to drive through the officer's vehicle, but another trooper approached the vehicle and took him into custody.
The motorist was later identified as Nathan Jones. He is currently on furlough under the Vermont Department of Corrections. On March 2, he will answer to the charges of DUI, criminal DLS, attempting to elude, gross careless and negligent operation, gross operating without owner's consent and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
State Police say Jones was supposed to be wearing an alcohol-detecting anklet, which he removed and disposed of.
