Man in Custody After Standoff

Elliot Street at Mechanic Street is closed due to the incident

A man was taken to the hospital after a standoff with police ended in Newton, Massachusetts.

Newton Police responded to reports of a man with a knife who had barricaded himself inside a building Thursday afternoon.

Elliot Street at Mechanic Street in the Upper Falls neighborhood was closed due to the ongoing police incident, and police urged residents to avoid the area.

Officers called to 10 Mechanic St. for an out-of-control man in his early 20s arrived to see that he had a steak knife in his hands and had barricaded himself inside, police said.

The man came outside of the home at one point but was still holding the knife and was with a woman believed to be his mother, police said.

When the man separated from the woman, SWAT officers were able to tackle him and get the knife away, police said.

A few homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

Police are investigating if there are any possible charges.
