The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency has been brought into the investigation of an early morning, high speed chase down the Maine Turnpike that ended with a car crash.

A trooper attempted to pull a car over for speeding in the Lewiston-Auburn area, but the vehicle sped up with speeds exceeding 100 MPH, Maine State Police confirm.

Police say the car took the Westbrook exit and ultimately hit a street sign on Allen Avenue in Portland. Both occupants fled from the scene on foot.

The male passenger was later arrested by Maine State Police on Washington Avenue. Carlos Alcantara, 33, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with possession of bath salts.

Police are still searching for the female operator of the vehicle. She has been identified as Ashley Gagne, 24, of Lewiston, Maine. Drug agents plan to question her when she is found.

The car that Gagne and Alcantara abandoned was a rental vehicle from Massachusetts.
