Police: Murder Suspect May Break Into Maine Campgrounds

Maine police are stepping up efforts to track down a Parkman man wanted in connection with the killing of his ex-girlfriend.

Robert Burton, who is considered to be armed and dangerous, has eluded authorities for nearly a month since Stephanie Gebo was found dead in her Parkman home on June 5.

State police held a news conference Thursday at Guilford Town Hall to update the public and media about efforts to apprehend 38-year-old Burton.

They say it is possible that Burton has discreetly broken into several campgrounds from Guilford to Parkman. He may be looking in campgrounds for food, clothing, or hunting and fishing equipment, as police believe he is hiding in the woods.

Police say that if the public spots Burton, they should not approach him. They ask tourists to contact them if he is spotted over the Fourth of July weekend.

Area residents have been told to remain vigilant. Police add that any locals should lock their doors and make sure their keys are out of their cars.

The last time he was spotted was on June 17 in the Guilford area.

Meanwhile, electronic message boards have been placed along roads in Newport, Athens, Charleston, Milo and Monson leading into the Parkman-Guilford area to warn tourists about the manhunt.

Gebo's family and friends are offering a $3,200 reward for Burton's capture.
