Police: Suspect Dead in Rite Aid Standoff

The man accused of trying to hold up a Camden, Maine, Rite Aid, taking a hostage and causing a standoff with police for hours is dead, according to police.

Robert Beerman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Camden Police told WCSH-6.

The Camden Police chief said Beerman walked into the Rite Aid shortly after 7:00 p.m. Monday in an attempt to rob it. Police said one person was then taken hostage. No shots were fired and there were no reports of injuries.

Police blocked off Route 1 to traffic and surrounded the Rite Aid. The State Police tactical team responded to the scene, as well as Camden Police officers and Knox County Sheriff deputies. The hostage was later released unharmed.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the tactical team forced their way into the store and found Beerman's body.

Police told WCSH-6 Beerman was responsible for a previous robbery at this same Rite Aid store.
