Providence City Councilman Arrested for Embezzlement

Kevin Jackson faces several charges, including giving false documents

A city councilman in Providence, Rhode Island, has been arraigned Wednesday on charges he misused campaign funds and embezzled more than $127,000 from a youth organization he founded.

Authorities say Kevin Jackson was arrested on embezzlement and other charges.

Jackson is charged with giving false documents, personal use of campaign funds, unlawful appropriation and embezzlement.

It's alleged that Jackson used his campaign contributions for personal expenses from Nov. 2014 to May 2015 and misused contributions to the account for the Providence Cobras Track and Field Club, which he founded. Prosecutors say Jackson falsely claimed that he had zero campaign contributions in 2010.

A phone call to Jackson's attorney went unanswered, and his answering machine was full.

The Democrat is majority leader and was first elected to the Providence City Council in 1995.
