RI Man Convicted in Beating Daughter to Death

The girl's mother, Mayra Gonzalez, was convicted of child neglect in 2013.

A Providence man has been found guilty in the fatal beating of his newborn daughter four years ago.

A judge on Monday convicted Christopher Jimenez of second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of his daughter, Christina, after a bench trial.

Authorities say the 30-year-old Jimenez beat his then-5-week-old daughter in June 2012. She was removed from life support 17 days after being hospitalized.

Prosecutors have said the girl suffered four skull fractures and more than two dozen rib fractures, as well as broken legs, fingers and toes.

The girl's mother, Mayra Gonzalez, was convicted of child neglect in 2013.

Jimenez's lawyers suggested police focused on Jimenez too quickly and that someone else injured the child.

His sentencing is set for Dec. 13.
