Rain on the Way This Weekend, Breaking Pattern

You may experience some déjà vu, in terms of the forecast, starting with Friday morning. Overnight Thursday, temperatures slip into the mid to upper 40s under partly to mostly cloudy skies. We see some peeks of sunshine Friday with high temperatures locked into the 50s at the coast. Alongside with that sea breeze, northwestern New England will see breaks of sunshine and a light wind with highs reaching into the 60s.

This weekend, we finally kick this unseasonably cool pattern featuring a mix of sun and clouds. However, it will not the best timing for any outdoor plans for Mother's Day.

Saturday starts off dry, but rain will spread in through New England from southwest to northeast. That means rain starts during the morning in parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island before spreading into the Boston area during the afternoon and onward into Maine by Saturday evening.

Soaking rain and gusty winds will arrive Saturday night into much of Mother's Day on Sunday. Some areas will see one to two inches of rain, with rivers and streams rising in the face of that and our overall damp pattern. We could see the soaking rain start to lighten up by dinnertime Sunday for western New England if this system takes a track farther out to sea instead of hugging the coastline, so we are keeping an eye on the forecast closely for your plans.

As announced earlier Thursday morning, New England is finally drought-free. Connecticut still has an area considered abnormally dry, but that's the only spot in New England.

As mentioned above, a shift in the pattern is on tap for next week, with a warm-up and sunshine. We're talking 70 degree highs by Wednesday, but this weekend's system is needed to move through to kick the pattern we've been dealing with the past few days. So we just have to get through a soggy Mother's Day weekend to reach a sun-filled warm-up ahead.
