Boston IndyCar Race Called Off

The Labor Day IndyCar race planned for Boston's Seaport district has been cancelled, city officials confirmed Friday.

"As we continued to work with Boston Grand Prix they were unwilling or unable to meet the necessary requirements to hold an event of this size," Patrick Brophy, the city's chief of operations, said in a statement. "The Mayor feels strongly in protecting the taxpayers and limiting the impact to residents, and we are not shy that we held them to very high standards."

John Casey, president of the Grand Prix of Boston, told the Globe that the relationship between his group and the city "is untenable." He called the whole process "so ridiculous, it's hysterical."

The 2.2-mile Grand Prix of Boston was scheduled to be held over Labor Day weekend in the city's Seaport district. It is now expected to be held in a different Northeast city.
